Mount Tambora

At the time of the Tambora eruption, some 140,000 natives were reported to be living on Sumbawa. Sumbawa is long vaguely rectangular island running nearly from west to east. | www.lombokislands.com

How to reach the crater
There are some choice to reach the crater or caldera of Mount Tambora:
Start the trip using airplane from Mataram to Bima (35 minutes), continued from Bima by car to Doropeti on south side of Tambora to the location of Volcano observation (5 hours).
by car from Mataram to Kayangan Port and cross to Alas with Ferry until Pototano Port. Then continue to Doropeti (15 hours).
To reach the lips of caldera, the climbing activities can be done from many side, such as:
From west, Calabai village and Pancasila village until west Caldera, this is general way, it needs 2-3 days.
From North, Kawind nae village untill north Caldera, it is shorter and fast from the forest but it is climb from the beginning until the top of the mountain.
From the noth-west, Doropeti vellage to the east untill west caldera and north west calseera. It is pass the woods where there are “jelatang” or “maladi” , the plant which hurt our skin when it touched.
From south, Doropeti, 12 km to east. It will pass the road to the north and climbing from PT. BA palantation until south caldera, with one day trip. This way is passing the dry savanna. But if we use car we can reach until 1200 mdpl in 3 hours, then continued on foot in 3-4 hours. (Heryadi & Iqbal, Mount Fire,West Nusa Tenggara)
A big Volcano that erupted in the 19th century
The paroxysmal eruption of Mt. Tambora on the island of Sumbawa in April 1815 – despite having triggered a world wide historic event – is astonishingly neglected in studies of volcanic activity. The world wide event referred to was the so-called “Year without a Summer” – the exceptionally cold months of 1816. In addition to this, Mt. Tambora’s eruption far-eclipsed in violence and ejecta the more famous eruption of Krakatau (Krakatoa) in 1883, which also had an impact on the world’s weather.
Though disappointing, the reason for part of this neglect is not hard to find. There exist few contemporary records of the eruption and what there is has seen little reprinting in modern works. Nonetheless, enough data is now available that a more definitive study can and should be undertaken. The intent of this posting is to synthesize and integrate what is available and hopefully inspire further investigation.

Because of the unique and rare nature of this animal, its habitat – KNP - was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. | www.lombokislands.com:

"KOMODO NATIONAL PARK – INDONESIA

Real dragons spurt no fire, have no need to fly and cast no magic spells. And still, one look from them might render you speechless. These komodos, the real life dragons, are a sight indeed. Gigantic, the lizard-like creatures are about two or three meters in length. They can easily weigh about 165 kilograms. Despite of their sheer size and appearance, they are not active hunters. What makes them intimidating is the fact that they are a patient predator. In the wild, they stalk a victim, usually a weak or injured one. One bite and that’s what it usually takes. After following the victim for a while, sometimes up to several days’ time, the komodos will devour the dying prey.

The Gili Islands

The Gili Islands (Indonesian:Tiga Gili [Three Gilis], Kepulauan Gili [Gili Islands]) are an archipelago of three small islands — Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air — just off the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia. | www.lombokislands.com:

"GILI TRAWANGAN
Gili Trawangan is the largest of Lombok’s Gili Islands and is the only one to rise significantly above sea level. It is 3km long and 2km wide with a population of about 1000. Of the Gilis, Trawangan has the most tourist facilities; the pub Tîr na Nôg claims that Trawangan is the smallest island in the world with an Irish pub. The most crowded part of Trawangan lies on the eastern side.

On Gili Trawangan (as well as the other two Gilis), there are no motorized vehicles. The main means of transportation are bicycles (rented by locals to tourists) and cidomo (a small horsedrawn carriage). For traveling to and from each of the Gilis, locals usually use motorized boats and speedboats.

The Gili islands are renowned not only for their friendly inhabitants but the total tropical island paradise feeling that they have. The white coral beaches, the warm and inviting waters all invite to snorkeling, sun bathing and of course diving. The diversity of aquatic life is astounding and just off the shores you can find turtles, sting rays, reef sharks, baracudas, and a myriad of small and large fish."

Interesting Places at Bali

Bali is a beautiful island, surrounded by a marvelous white sand beaches (compared with Ancol Beach – Jakarta which is dirty nowadays). It has a lot of pura – Hindunese temples, and a lot more historical monuments, makes Bali attracts tourists, both domestic and overseas ones. People said, in Bali you might find people from any nations, French, US, Aussie, Japan, Korean, Taiwanese, Arabic, any kind of nationality.

There are interesting place that you can visit while you at Bali:
# Ground Zero. This is a memorial of 1st Bali bombing. We can find this memorial at Legian street to Kuta beach. The memorial bears the names and nationalities of each of those vistim. It is flanked by the national flags of the victims. The monument is well-maintained and illuminated at night. Let’s pray no more tragedy happens in Bali, since (we got the information from local people there) Bali’s tourism was dramatically down after 1st and 2nd bomb attack. Number of overseas tourists was down and many shops were closed down, whereas the tourism is the dominant business of Balinese.

# All the way to Kuta Beach there are many bars, resto, hotels and shops selling clothes, pictures, art, handicraft, etc. We suggest you to bargain when buy things at the shops, because they sell with a bit higher price. Why? Because the rental fee in this area is very high,
as well…
Jalan Pantai Kuta

Jalan Pantai Kuta

# Kuta Beach. This is a must go place for tourists. This beach has a nice high wave, so many surfers can be found here. This beach is very crowded by local and overseas tourists, usually they swim, sun bathe, surf, or run on the beach. To enter this area is free of charge, you only need to pay your parking fee. At the beach, you may find easily the street massagers, hair plait helpers, temporary tattoo makers, beach chairs rental, well, it’s surely a busy beach over there.
Pantai Kuta

Pantai Kuta

# Hardrock hotel, here, you can swim in a very big and cozy warm water pool, so you may swim until late at night. At the pool center, there is a sandy area, quite unique because the sand is clean and doesn’t make the pool dirty. There is a waterfall, children pool with the sliding bar, and even they have a big screen with projector showing the movies. The changing room is nice, towels and bathing sets provided. But the admission is a bit expensive, Rp.100.000 (US$ 11) per person for domestic tourist. Besides the swimming pool, they have spa, gym, café and the Hard Rock Bali radio channel is located in there, so we may see them on air directly.
Hardrock hotel

Hardrock hotel

Usually, tour agents would combine below places in 1 tour package :
Benoa Cape (Tanjung Benoa), Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK), Dream Land Beach, Pura Uluwatu (Uluwatu Temple) and last but not least, sunset dinner at Jimbaran
# Benoa Cape (Tanjung Benoa)

At the beach, we can do water activities, such as jetski, parasailing, banana boat, flying fish (firstly I thought nothing special about this game, but after saw it myself, it’s pretty cool), diving, bottom glass boat. You may rent the glass ‘see through’ bottom boat, so you can see through the sea. Be careful when renting, the price offered will be very ‘crazy’. Fortunately before going there, I browsed the website and looked for the price for those activities.
#

# Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK). Located at Jimbaran area, south Bali, here, will be built a great statue of Visnu sitting on Garuda. In July 2008, this great status which built by I Nyoman Nuarta, was still in partial, Visnu part, Garuda (the bird) part and also Visnu’s hands part. This great statue would be the icon as Liberty in NY, USA. Located high up the hill, with a great view surrounding. GWK also has theater to perform Balinese traditional dances (depends on schedule). At the front gate, you would be welcomed by 2 Balinese’s dancers.
There are kiosk, food center and bargain shops.
Some tour agents choose GWK as dinner point with the sunset view.
Admission Fee is Rp.15,000 (US$1.6) / person and Rp.5,000 (US$0.6) / car.
GWK

Dreamland Beach. It’s on the same way to GWK, at this area, you may see a star hotel and resort is under construction. This area was built by Tommy Soeharto (former Indonesian President’s Son) but then abandoned after their era went down. The beach looks cleaner compared to Kuta Beach, and more overseas tourists, but in my opinion the location is quite far and in a remote area (probably those are the reasons why oversea tourists find it exciting). After the hotel and resorts ready for public, this beach would be more crowded. To enter this area, you only need to pay parking ticket Rp.2000 (US$0.25) per car.
Dreamland Bali

# Pura Luhur Uluwatu (Hindunese temple). This temple is location in West corner of the cape hill, that’s why it’s called Ulu which means corner and watu means stone/rocks. The temple was built at the rock goes to the sea. The view is amazing. I’m recommending this place. Before entering the location, visitor is requested to wear a rope (and additional sarong to visitors wearing short pants – above your knee) to respect the elders of this place. This temple is surrounded by woods with the monkeys live there, once said the monkeys were the loyal followers of the Priest, the sacred temple keeper. Be careful of your belongings : hats, glasses, camera, necklace, earrings, to be in a safe place since the monkeys can be annoying and take those things away from the owners. Many would take sticks to self defense, but please don’t harm the monkeys.
There is Kecak Dance performance (with additional fee) located at the corner of the cliff. Every visitor will be overawed visit this place.

Fak Fak : Dive Destinations : Kararu Dive Voyages : Indonesia Live Aboard Scuba Diving Adventures:

"Fak Fak and Triton Bay is a very remote area located south-east of Raja Ampat in Irian Jaya (West Papua), and is famous for its record breaking marine bio-diversity. Because the water here is so nutrient rich, visibility averages 10-20m, however those same nutrients feed an amazing web of life. We're talking extreme bio-mass. New species of fish and corals are being discovered all the time.

Triton Bay, otherwise known as Fak-Fak lies in the heart of the Coral Triangle - a global centre of marine biodiversity and one of the world's top priorities for marine conservation. The Coral Triangle includes various important nesting sites for migratory sea turtles, the channels between major landmasses serve as passages for migrating mammals and mantas, and the waters support feeding grounds for large tuna populations that are targeted by international fishing fleets. Extraordinary numbers of hard corals, mollusks and reef fishes can be found in this area.

These reefs in this area are fantastic species factories. This region is simply mind-blowing in terms of its diversity. From the perspective of marine - and especially coral reef - bio-diversity, it is clearly unparalleled for an area of this size. Scientists keep breaking world records for the number of species found at single sites. Biodiversity surveys conducted in Triton Bay by Conservation International have identified up 335 species of coral reef fish. Among them was a small epaulette shark that 'walks' on its fins. This discovery has turned Triton Bay into one of the most popular and valuable dive sites in the world.

Fak Fak and Triton Bay are still relatively un-explored and we expect to discover even more great dive sites during our cruises to this region. A stunning underwater environment combined with one of the most singular and picturesque landscapes, makes this area a truly spectacular dive location."
